Defy Gravity in India's Tallest Vertical Run | Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi

The Idea

  • What is a ‘Tower Run’?

Defying nature’s most irresistible force (= gravity) in a straight-line vertical ascent up an iconic city tower, has literally caught the fancy of the athletic world. Starting from the famous run up the Empire State Building in New York, the sport of ‘Tower Running’ (also called ‘Stair Running’ or ‘Vertical Running’) has now spread to every continent. Last year alone there were 300 such races around the world, with a total of 1,20,000 amateur participants. With Skyscraper Dash, we now bring it to India!

  • The Skyscraper Dash

Skyscraper Dash is India’s tallest tower race. It is held in the tallest buildings in the country’s major metros and participants have to climb the stairs to the top of the building. Our venues range from the 52 story Kohinoor Square in Mumbai which is India’s tallest commercial building to the 32 story World Trade Center which is the tallest commercial building in Bengaluru. Our events are always accompanied by our buzzing rooftop afterparties with music, food and beverages, a medal for your efforts, and prizes if you happen to be one of the fastest to the top!

  • Why Tower Running?

Stair climbing is step for step one of the best forms of exercise and the easiest way to work fitness into a busy schedule. Contrary to popular perception, climbing stairs is actually good for your joints and lower impact than running. We are on a mission to promote the health benefits of ‘taking the stairs’.

So start taking the stairs to your home or office and join the stair climbing movement!

FAQs

Stair running is a fast growing sport around the world. There were over 300 such races across Asia, North and South America, Europe and Australia in 2014. Many iconic commercial towers in the world now have an annual stair climbing race.
Like most other athletic events, this is something anyone can attempt. If you feel like you are not in good shape, you can do it recreationally (slow and steady) and enjoy the experience. However, if you haven’t been working out for more than a year, and you have a medical condition that may impede your effort, it is best to consult a physician and/or experienced fitness trainer before attempting this.
Stair running is safer than running as you don’t have to worry about traffic. Contrary to popular perception, stair running actually strengthens joints and it is actually lower impact on knees than running. However, we do not recommend high intensity exercise like stair running for anyone with cardiac issues.

To cover any medical eventuality, Skyscraper Dash develops and implements a medical safety plan and carries out medical drills before the event. All participants are required to fill out a medical questionnaire to screen out participants with any cardiac issues.

A 2011 New York Times article that surveyed sports and exercise science professionals named ‘stair running’ as the single “best form of exercise”. Only a few minutes of stair running a day can build endurance, muscle power and lower the risk of cardiovascular and lifestyle diseases like hypertension, hyperglycemia and obesity.

Stair running is one of the best forms of High Intensity Interval Training. Recent research published in the Journal of Experimental Physiology Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise reviewing the health benefits of high intensity training showed “improved insulin sensitivity and blood sugar regulation, lowering the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes” & “significant improvements” in the functioning of the blood vessels and heart.

Stair running burns 3-4 times the calories as walking and 2x the calories of running. It is actually lower impact than running and strengthens joints. Stair running is used by many elite athletes to boost their anaerobic threshold and body’s ability to process oxygen.

More details about start time, participation categories, registration cost, etc. for Mumbai and Delhi editions will be up soon. Don’t miss on any of the important information by signing up for updates, if you haven’t already above!
